Kawah Ijen, located in East Java, Indonesia, is one of only two places in the world where the rare natural phenomenon of blue fire can be witnessed—the other being Iceland. When exposed to oxygen and ignited, these gases burn with an electric-blue flame, visible only in the dark—typically before sunrise. The journey to see the blue fire begins around 1:00 AM from Pos Paltuding, the last base for climbers heading toward Ijen’s crater. The trek to the summit covers approximately 3 kilometers and takes between 1.5 to 2 hours. A good level of fitness is recommended, as the trail can be steep and rugged. After sunrise, climbers are rewarded with breathtaking views of Ijen Crater Lake.
