Let's book tours with us and we will make you smile again. Kawah Ijen, located in East Java, Indonesia, is one of only two places in the world where the rare natural phenomenon of blue fire can be witnessed—the other being Iceland.
This mesmerizing blue flame is caused by the combustion of sulfuric gases that emerge from cracks in the volcano at extremely high temperatures. When exposed to oxygen and ignited, these gases burn with an electric-blue flame, visible only in the dark—typically before sunrise.
The journey to see the blue fire begins around 1:00 AM from Pos Paltuding, the last base for climbers heading toward Ijen’s crater. The trek to the summit covers approximately 3 kilometers and takes between 1.5 to 2 hours. A good level of fitness is recommended, as the trail can be steep and rugged.
After sunrise, climbers are rewarded with breathtaking views of Ijen Crater Lake. This turquoise-colored lake, formed from a volcanic eruption about 2,500 years ago, is not only visually stunning but also geologically significant. With a depth of up to 200 meters and an area exceeding 5,000 hectares, it is the largest highly acidic volcanic lake in the world.
The best time to visit Mount Ijen is during the dry season, from May to October, when weather conditions are most favorable for trekking and visibility is clear in the early hours of the morning.
